Science Teachers' Association of Singapore
Seminar for Physics and Chemistry Teachers
|
Endorsed by the Science Teachers' Association of Singapore, this conference was held in 1994 at Anglo-Chinese School. It was for secondary teachers. Mr Peter S P Lim was sharing some of his thoughts with the teachers. |
|
Left: Mr Peter Lim demonstrates circular motion using a tennis ball. This topic has been taken out of the 'O' level Physics syllabus about 10 years ago and put into A-level. JC1 & 2 students need to acquaint themselves with the basic concepts of circular motion before going onto the A-level circular motion concepts which are then dealt in greater depths before the topics of Gravitation and Simple Harmonic Motion can be fully understood. If a JC student is able to explain how a police car, spinning around in a small 180 degree turn, can leave some tyres marks on the road, and how the circular motion of the moon around the earth is related to Simple Harmonic Motion, only then can he say that he has truly understood all these related concepts required of A-level students |
Right: With the use of 4 small polystyrene balls on a straw, it can be easily demonstrated how the Centre of mass (C.M.) of a composite body can be shifted towards the direction at which more polystyrene balls are added. |

Left: The picture shows how a perspex wine bottle holder can be used to balance a bottle of wine. The Centre of Gravity of the combined masses passes through the base of the wine holder so that it can be balanced with a bottle filled with wine. |
The learning never stops even for teachers. On the right, teachers were listening attentively. |
